NC Country Club
If youre looking to play an outstanding
round of mountain golf, look no further than the three
award-winning courses here at The Waynesville Inn. The
Carolina course was the original nine-hole layout, designed
by famed Scottish architect, Donald Ross, and lies on
the pastures of an existing dairy farm. Over the years,
the surrounding mountainsides were shaped into two additional
nine-hole layouts, the Dogwood and Blue Ridge courses.
Over the years, the Inn has hosted the likes of Sam Snead,
Chi Chi Rodriguez, Billy Graham, President Richard Nixon,
and even Willie Nelson. In keeping with the tradition
of excellence, the courses at The Waynesville Inn recently
received a 4-star rating from Golf Digest. As of this
year International Golf Maintenance has taken the courses
playability and natural beauty to another level. Its
no surprise that individuals and golf groups alike, return
year after year to play and stay.
Ross, the designer of our Carolina course, is considered
the most prolific golf course architect in history. Designing
and overseeing the construction of more than 400 golf
courses throughout the United States, his creative genes
gave him a reputation for crafting great golf courses
that were a test for all abilities.
Ross clear vision for
how the game should be played called for the golfer to
have a balanced attack. No proficient skill should
make up for deficiencies in the golfers game,
His goal was to "force
a man to use judgment and to exercise mental control in
making the correct shot." As such, his measurement
of a good golf course demanded "...accurate tee shots,
accurate iron play, precise handling of the short game,
and consistent putting."
In the early 1920's, the
dairy farm that occupied the current property was sold
to Mr. Jim Long. It was the combination of Jim Long's
vision and Donald Ross's legendary genius that turned
a cow pasture into the "Gem of Western North Carolina,"
opening in 1926 as the Waynesville Country Club (WCC).
Waynesville had already established
itself as a premier mountain resort destination and mecca
for artisan shopping, allowing the WCC to become an instant
success. And since that time, many groups and individuals
return annually to the club to enjoy Smoky Mountain tranquility
and the friendly hospitality of our great staff.
Over the years the Inn has
hosted many well known figures, among them- Sam Snead,
Chi-Chi Rodriguez, Arnold Palmer, Billy Graham, President
Richard Nixon, and more recently Willie Nelson. Our tradition
of excellence has allowed us to remain a popular destination
as powerhouse courses of the North Carolina lowlands developed.
Today that proud tradition continues.
In 2009, WCC changed its
name to The Waynesville Inn Golf Resort & Spa to better
reflect the role in the local community and region. The
Inns number one focus is to make your experience
one that is more memorable and valuable.
